How to use the GEO Checker
- Type your site address into the box, like yoursite.com.
- Press Check GEO. We read the page, robots.txt and llms.txt, and request the page as three AI bots.
- Start with Fix these first, then open the checks below it for the evidence behind each result.
- Confirm your brand name and what you do, then use the one-click prompts for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Mode.
- Copy any robots.txt or JSON-LD fix at the bottom into your site, then check again.
What is GEO?
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is SEO for AI answers. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Mode for a tool like yours, the engine searches the web, reads a few pages and writes an answer with links. GEO is making sure your page is one it can reach, understand and quote.
Most of it is plain good SEO: a page that loads without JavaScript, says clearly what it is, and answers real questions. A few parts are new, like which AI crawlers your robots.txt and firewall let in.
What the GEO checker looks at
- Access: whether robots.txt allows the AI search bots (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others), whether your firewall or CDN turns them away, and whether the page can be indexed. Build crawler rules with the robots.txt generator.
- Content: how much text is in the HTML before any JavaScript runs, and whether snippet limits stop engines from quoting you.
- Entity: Organization or product schema, and sameAs links to your profiles, so engines know who you are. Write it with the schema markup generator.
- Answers: an opening that says what it is and who it's for, real questions with direct answers, and concrete facts like prices, numbers and dates.
- Discovery: llms.txt and Bing Webmaster Tools, since ChatGPT search and Copilot draw on Bing's index.
Training bots vs. search bots
AI companies run two kinds of crawlers. Training bots like GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect pages for future models. Search bots like OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot fetch pages to answer a question right now, usually with a link back. Blocking training is a licensing choice and doesn't hurt your score. Blocking search keeps you out of the answers, so the checker flags it.
GEO starts with the basics, so run the marketing SEO checker too. Links from other sites help AI engines trust you as well: see where you stand with the Domain Rating checker.
Frequently asked questions
Does this show how often AI answers mention me?
No. Nobody can see inside AI answers for free and at scale. This checks whether engines can use your page. Use the one-click test prompts to see what each engine says about you today.
Should I block GPTBot and other training bots?
It's your choice. Blocking training bots keeps your pages out of future training data but doesn't remove you from AI search. The checker only marks you down for blocking search and answer bots.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It helps a little at most. It's a proposed standard and the big engines show little sign of using it yet. It's cheap to add, so the checker suggests it but gives it a low weight.
Why does my firewall check fail when robots.txt allows the bots?
Bot protection on Cloudflare and other CDNs often blocks AI crawlers by default, regardless of robots.txt. Allow verified AI search bots in your CDN's bot settings. Our test uses the bots' user agents, not their IP addresses, so a CDN that verifies by IP may treat the real bots differently.
Is the GEO checker free?
Yes. No signup and no email gate. We fetch your page once per check and don't store it.
